Boiçucanga is a beach and neighbourhood in the municipality of São Sebastião on the São Paulo north coast, a horseshoe-shaped bay between Maresias and Camburi beaches. Its name comes from the Tupi language and is read as «skeleton of the great snake» or «big-headed snake», after the mountain that rises at its left-hand end. Its sea is calm, its sand thick and yellowish and its water clear turquoise. Before the coast road was built it was a small, hard-to-reach «caiçara» fishing village; it has since become one of São Sebastião's best-equipped beaches, with a shopping area, campsites, inns, hotels, restaurants and shops. At its left end the Boiçucanga river flows out, where fishermen who still fish the traditional way moor their boats. Its finest feature is that it is one of the few beaches in Brazil where the sun sets into the sea, at its right-hand end, in a scene completed by the islands of Montão de Trigo, Gatos and Couves on the horizon. So stay until sunset after a day of calm swimming.
