Dois Rios, «Two Rivers», is a beach on the open coast of Ilha Grande, on the site of the former Cândido Mendes prison, closed for good in the 1990s. Four surviving rooms now house the Prison Museum, the first unit of the Ilha Grande Ecomuseum, about twelve kilometres from the village of Abraão. The beach is reached on a trail from Abraão of about seven kilometres each way, taking roughly three hours, along an open track that is long but not very hard. On the way back you can sometimes catch the shuttle of the Rio de Janeiro State University, which keeps a small base on the beach. Overnight stays are not allowed, so you must leave before dusk, and boat tours only pass by, as there is no pier and the surf is rough. It makes a full day of history, forest and sea; start early and carry enough water.
