Gaibu is one of the best-known beaches on the Pernambuco coast, in the municipality of Cabo de Santo Agostinho south of Recife; its Tupi name means «valley of the spring». The beach curves around a bay closed to the south by the green, rocky headland of Santo Agostinho. Its clear water suits both swimming and surfing, and at low tide natural pools form among the rocks and reefs. Kiosks and simple restaurants serving fish and seafood line the sand, and weekends bring crowds from Recife. From Gaibu you can climb onto the neighbouring headland for trails and views of the small hidden coves to the south, or move on to nearby beaches such as Calhetas. It is about an hour from Recife by car, and the sunny months from September to February are the best time to go.
