White sand.
Icaraí is a beach and neighbourhood in Caucaia west of Fortaleza, about twenty kilometres from the city centre and easily reached by the Ulisses Guimarães road and the CE-090. Its strip of firm white sand runs for about nine kilometres, lined with holiday homes, condominiums and fishing villages. Icaraí has a striking story with the sea: from the 1960s and 1970s erosion began to hit the beaches west of Fortaleza, as currents carried the sand westwards and each beach lost its sand without replacement. When the erosion reached Icaraí, in the 2000s the sea swallowed much of the sand and part of the seafront road, and rock barriers were built to protect the shore. Icaraí is still a local favourite for Fortaleza residents, with simple kiosks and restaurants and waves suited to surfing and kitesurfing. It lies on the way to Cumbuco and its dunes, so the two can be combined in a day. Take care around the barriers and currents when swimming.
