Itacimirim is a beach in Camaçari, north of Salvador, once a fishing village, set on a narrow strip of land between the sea to the east and the Virgens and Velado lagoons to the west. Its name is Tupi for «little stone mother». It lies on the Costa dos Coqueiros, the Coconut Coast, as the last beach on the Estrada do Coco heading from Salvador towards Praia do Forte, separated from Guarajuba by the mouth of the Pojuca River. Its best-known stretch is Praia da Espera, where the Brazilian sailor Amyr Klink landed in 1984 after rowing across the Atlantic, now lined with food stalls. The sand is yellowish and the waves gentle, with guesthouses, a resort and many holiday homes, and for most of the year only locals live there. It suits a quiet beach day on a trip along the Coconut Coast road.
