Praia de Itaguaré in Bertioga is one of the most beautiful beaches of the «Baixada Santista» and is considered the last fully preserved beach in the region, one of its last important refuges of untouched vegetation, as the forest runs unbroken from the shoreline up to the Serra do Mar mountains. The beach stretches between the sea and the Itaguaré River, which flows out at its end, framed by important remnants of Atlantic Forest and threatened beach-plain vegetation. That is why surfers and ecotourists come here, looking for nature without buildings, away from the crowded beaches. For years developers and environmentalists have disputed the area's future, and local people sometimes volunteer to clear the sand of rubbish carried down by the river. Bring water and food, as services are scarce, and respect the fragile environment by leaving no trace.
