Itaparica Beach is one of the beaches of Vila Velha, across the Third Bridge from Vitória. It runs for about three and a half kilometres along the city's seafront, continuing from Itapoã and Praia da Costa beaches, lined with tall apartment blocks, restaurants and cafés. The beach curves gently, with clear water two to three metres deep over coral reefs that suit snorkelling and build strong waves loved by surfers. Nearby Barra do Jucu beach hosts the city's surfing and bodyboarding championships. In the morning the promenade fills with walkers, runners and players of beach football and volleyball, and in the evening the restaurants and cafés take over. Lifeguards work during holidays because of the strong waves, so swim near their posts and follow their guidance.
