Jurerê is a beach and neighbourhood on the north coast of Florianópolis island, between Canasvieiras and Forte beaches, with the calm, clear water typical of the island's northern shore, good for families and swimming. Locals split the district in two: «Jurerê Internacional» to the west, a property development known for its luxury villas and beach clubs, and the older «Jurerê Tradicional» to the east, which was there first; the beach runs in front of both. The area stayed wild until the 20th century, and the beach was generally called «Praia do Forte». In the 1920s the shipbuilder Antônio Amaro was given the land in compensation after his shipyard was moved out of the centre for the Hercílio Luz Bridge works, and it bore his name for years before becoming the present district after his death. Jurerê Internacional has tree-lined streets and upmarket restaurants, the traditional side a simpler, cheaper feel, and at the western end the historic Fort of São José da Ponta Grossa crowns the hill. The beach gets very busy in January and February, so visit outside peak summer if you can.
