Mar Grande is a beach and small village on Itaparica Island in the Bay of All Saints, part of the municipality of Vera Cruz, and one of the island's closest points to Salvador, whose towers rise on the horizon across the bay. The island was home to fishermen until steamships linked it to Salvador from 1878. Holiday houses followed, the resort peaked in the 1950s, and a new boom came in the 1970s with the ferry and small-boat services that land at Mar Grande. Visitors cross from Salvador's maritime terminal on a launch of about forty minutes to find calm water lined by old houses and simple fish restaurants. The writer Myriam Fraga, who spent the summers of her childhood here, portrayed the beach in many of her pieces.
