Maresias is a beach and district seat in the municipality of São Sebastião on São Paulo state's north coast, named after the sea breeze, the «maresia», that blows over it. Its soft, yellowish sand runs five kilometres, and with big waves and a strong current it is one of Brazil's best-known surf spots, hosting competitions. Surfers discovered it in 1974 while exploring the beaches north of Guarujá, and it became a young people's destination par excellence. World surfing champion Gabriel Medina grew up here. The district beside the beach has plenty of restaurants and shops and a lively nightlife, and walks are run from here into the Atlantic Forest that covers the hills behind. Because of the strong waves and current, swimming is for confident swimmers, near the lifeguards, while watching the surfers from the sand is a pleasure in itself. It lies on the Rio–Santos coast road, visited on a day trip from São Sebastião or from Ilhabela by ferry.
