Gunga is a beach in Roteiro on the south coast of Alagoas, some 36 kilometres by road from Maceió, on a sand spit where the Roteiro lagoon meets the Atlantic, so it combines open sea with the calm water of the lagoon. Its best-known feature is the coconut grove stretching as far as the eye can see behind the pale sand, finest from the Mirante do Gunga, the lookout on the coastal road above. Nearby are coloured cliffs that visitors tour by buggy. It is reached by car, or by boat from the town of Barra de São Miguel across the water. On the cliffs the fire brigade advises safety equipment and professional guides for adventure activities. The water on the lagoon side is calmer for swimming.
