Praia do Pecém lies in São Gonçalo do Amarante, between Cumbuco and Paracuru beaches, about sixty kilometres west of Fortaleza along the CE-085. The area was once home to the Anacé, Guanacé and Jaguaruana peoples, some of whose descendants still live here. Thanks to its location, Pecém was chosen for a new port that works alongside Fortaleza's Mucuripe port to ship Ceará's industrial output. Building the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex shrank the beach, which hurt tourism in the area. Even so, the beach keeps a quiet fishing village, dunes, wide sands and warm water, and draws people looking for something simpler than busy Cumbuco. Ceará's coast is known for steady winds that draw kitesurfers to nearby beaches such as Cumbuco.
