Praia do Perequê lies in the Perequê district on the east of Guarujá island, beyond Pernambuco beach, and runs for about 2,400 metres. It is Guarujá's largest fishing colony and a stronghold of the traditional caiçara coastal fishermen. According to Guarujá's city hall, the Tupi name means «entry of fish to feed or spawn», after a small river that flows into the beach: fish and crabs swim in with the rising tide and out with the ebb, and otters, capybaras and many birds live along its banks. At the left end of the beach there is a small waterfall. The beach is known for fresh fish and seafood sold straight from the fishermen's boats and for its simple restaurants on the sand. It suits anyone looking for a fishing-village feel quieter than the crowded town beaches; come in the morning as the boats return.
