Praia do Rosa is one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Brazil, in Imbituba south of Garopaba, Santa Catarina. It lies in a crescent bay framed by green hills cloaked in Atlantic Forest, with coastal lagoons behind the sand. Once a quiet fishing village, it was discovered by surfers in the 1970s and 1980s and is now a stylish destination of small inns and restaurants among the hills, while keeping its natural character. Its beach has good waves for surfing, while the quieter end suits swimming. Between July and November southern right whales come close to the coast to calve, and can sometimes be seen from the hills above the bay, within the protected area set up for them. Walking trails lead from the beach to nearby, less crowded beaches and to the Ibiraquera lagoon. It gets busy in summer from December to February, so book ahead.
