Sambaqui is a neighbourhood and beach on the west coast of Florianópolis island, in the Santo Antônio de Lisboa district about 17 km from the centre, with a beach some 1.1 km long. Its name comes from «sambaquis», the shell mounds left by ancient Indigenous communities, traces of which still sometimes show on the sand. In the mid-18th century the first settlers from the Portuguese Azores chose Sambaqui and neighbouring Santo Antônio de Lisboa to make their home on the island, and both keep the feel of Azorean fishing villages: old houses, traditional fishing and oyster farms that are among Florianópolis's best-known products. Locals keep their customs alive with folk dances such as the «Boi de Mamão». The sea at Sambaqui is calm because it faces the North Bay, with a panoramic view of the mainland, and its sunset is one of the island's finest. Many waterfront restaurants serve fresh oysters and seafood, so the best plan is to arrive just before sunset and have dinner by the water.
