Praia do Santinho lies in the north of Florianópolis island between Ingleses and Moçambique, about 2 km long and quieter than the better-known beaches. Its waves are strong and high, so surfers make up most of its visitors. Its name, «little saint», comes from a rock carving said to look like a saint. On the headland rocks between it and Ingleses are engravings and stone-tool workshops left by the shell-mound builders, the sambaqui people, about 5,000 years ago.
