Praia dos Carneiros, in Tamandaré about 113 km south of Recife, is often counted among the most beautiful beaches in Brazil: tall coconut palms, fine pale sand and calm, warm water most of the year, shaped by the estuary of the Rio Formoso and a long reef that forms natural pools at low tide. Its postcard is the little 18th-century Capela de São Benedito on the sand. Boat trips visit sandbanks, a mud-bath area and the natural pools, and the Ilha de Santo Aleixo lies halfway along the boat route between Carneiros and Porto de Galinhas. Land access passes through private property, where large beach restaurants charge a minimum spend; you can also arrive by boat or walk about 7 km along the sand from Tamandaré beach. The best season is September to February, and April to July is the rainiest.
