Praia dos Ingleses, «Beach of the English», runs 4.8 km along the north of Florianópolis island, 31 km from the city centre. It is named after an English ship that ran aground there; one story says she floated off leaving some of her crew behind, another that she sank. Praia Brava lies to its north and Praia do Santinho to its south. Its right-hand end is calm and suits children and older people, while the other end has strong waves for surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding; behind it rise dunes used for sandboarding, and boat tours leave from the beach. It is one of the island's busiest beaches all year, its district home to more than 10,000 residents, with a shopping centre, restaurants, hotels and many guesthouses.
