Praia Grande, the «Big Beach», is a beach near the centre of Ubatuba and one of the most visited on the São Paulo north coast, not only in summer and high season but also in autumn and winter, when the high waves at its left-hand end draw surfers. It runs along a long strip of firm sand, reached from both sides of the Rio–Santos road along its length. The beach has kiosks all along the sand, private and pay parking, and plenty of shops, restaurants and inns around it serving visitors to Ubatuba and its other beaches. Ubatuba itself is known for more than a hundred beaches between the Atlantic Forest-covered mountains of the Serra do Mar and the sea. From the left-hand end of the beach a path leads to small neighbouring Tenório beach, quieter and prettier. Praia Grande makes an easy base for a full-service beach day; swimming is calmer in the middle than at the left end, where the waves break. It gets busy in the summer holidays, so arrive early.
