Quarto Crescente is a river beach on the Araguaia in Aragarças, Goiás, a town joined to Barra do Garças on the opposite bank, and it is the most popular beach in town. Here the Araguaia, one of the great rivers of central Brazil, runs between the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás. The place changes with the seasons. In the dry season the river drops and wide sand beaches appear, and in July the «Araguaia season» begins, when the water level is right for swimming: stalls go up on the sand, concerts are held, kayaks and banana boats come out, and many people camp along the banks. Besides swimming, visitors come to the Araguaia for sport fishing, river trips and watching birds and wildlife. Go in July for the festive atmosphere, or in the other dry months for calm, and take care with currents and stay within the swimming areas.
