A castle in a cave's mouth: Predjama is the world's largest cave castle, built in the thirteenth century inside a rock hollow 123 metres up a vertical cliff โ its white walls grow out of the stone as if born there, and the cave behind is a network of secret tunnels that supplied the castle under siege. Its tale is the robber knight Erazem Lueger in the fifteenth century: the Emperor's army besieged him a whole year while he tossed fresh cherries down at them from his secret tunnels in mockery, until a servant betrayed him and signalled the artillery to his privy โ where he died. The audio-guided tour passes the castle rooms, the torture cell, the chapel and the cave entrance. Nine kilometres from Postojna Cave on a combined ticket, with a summer shuttle; the photograph from the road below is legendary.
