Prejmer Fortified Church is a white Gothic church with a pointed tower, ringed by massive round white walls. Lining the inside of the walls are rows of small rooms on four floors, reached by wooden stairs and galleries, like terraced houses. It was founded by the Teutonic Knights, who began the Gothic church in 1218 on a Greek-cross plan, the only one of its kind in Transylvania. The Cistercians finished it after them, and it later became the church of the Saxon community. The rooms inside the walls were for village families to shelter in times of danger. It is part of the Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site. You pass through the covered passage into the courtyard, climb the wooden stairs to the rooms and galleries on the walls, and visit the church and the old school. It is about 17 km in a straight line northeast of Brașov and makes a half-day trip from there.
