A historic compound in central Nanjing that has seen six centuries of Chinese history: it was a Ming prince's mansion, then the seat of the Qing viceroy of the provinces south of the Yangtze, and the Qianlong Emperor stayed here on his journeys south. From 1853 to 1864 it was the palace of the «Heavenly King», leader of the Taiping rebellion, when they made Nanjing their capital; here Sun Yat-sen was sworn in as provisional president in 1912, and it housed the presidency of the Republic of China from 1927 to 1949. Today it is the China Modern History Museum, where visitors wander through offices and halls in a blend of Chinese and Western styles and the classical Xu Garden with its lake and stone boat, while exhibitions tell the story of China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Tickets are about CNY 35 in your own name, booked up to two days ahead through the museum's app, with opening from 8:30 to 18:00 and last entry at 17:00, per visitor guides.
