The Prespa Lakes are two mountain lakes in Western Macedonia, northwest Greece: Great Prespa, shared by Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, and Small Prespa, mostly in Greece. They lie about 45 km northwest of Kastoria in a straight line. Prespa National Park covers the southeastern part of Great Prespa within Greece and all of Small Prespa. It is a Ramsar-protected wetland, home to birds such as the Dalmatian pelican, great white pelican, great egret, pygmy cormorant and golden eagle, and to some 1,400 plant species. Its visitor centre is in the village of Agios Germanos. The two calm lakes spread between high mountains, snow-covered in winter, with reed beds around Small Prespa. A long floating wooden walkway links the shore with the little island of Agios Achillios, which has a small stone village and old remains. Visitors walk the floating bridge to the island, stop at viewpoints above both lakes and watch birds from the hides. Quiet mountain villages are scattered around the lakes; the area is remote, so it is best to drive and stay a night.
