Prielom Hornádu, the «Hornád breakthrough», is a stretch of about 16 km of the upper Hornád river in Slovak Paradise National Park in eastern Slovakia, about 11 km west of Spišská Nová Ves and 14 km southeast of Poprad in a straight line. Here the river has cut a canyon-like valley, in places only a few metres wide, with banks up to 150 metres high. It has been a national nature reserve since 1964, covering 290 hectares, for its geomorphological and natural value. It could not be walked end to end until 1974, when the mountain rescue path was finished, making it one of the most attractive trails in Slovak Paradise. The clear green river flows between towering forested limestone cliffs, and the path runs along its bank on steel steps and footholds fixed into the rock and chain bridges over the water. Visitors usually walk the trail one way from the Letanovce entrance or another, crossing the bridges and holding the chains along the rocks. It needs good walking shoes, the rocks are slippery after rain, and the walk takes several hours.
