Prokoško Lake is a small mountain lake at 1,670 m on Vranica mountain, in the municipality of Fojnica in central Bosnia. Steep timber huts and meadows with grazing horses surround it, giving an Alpine feel, and about 20,000 people visit each year. The lake has no known archaeological history, and its fame rests on the scene and the way traditional huts have spread around it. They gather on the green slopes, with grey timber roofs and simple fences, giving the place the air of a small mountain village. You can walk around the water or climb the slopes a little to see it from above, its blue surface set in green. Horses graze nearby, and in season you may find simple spots selling food and local products. Trails lead from here towards the peaks of Vranica, some needing experience, with wide views over the mountains. It is 54 km in a straight line from Sarajevo, and the last stretch needs careful driving on a mountain road that is not fully surfaced, so a high-clearance car is better, and ask about conditions before setting out. Summer is the best time, as snow covers the area for much of the year. Bring warm clothes, as it is cool even in summer at this height.
