Prudentópolis is a town of about 49,000 people in central Paraná, some 203 kilometres from Curitiba; it is the centre of Brazil's Ukrainian community and is nicknamed the «land of giant waterfalls». In 1896 the region took in about 1,500 Ukrainian families, nearly eight thousand immigrants, who settled in small farming colonies. The municipality was formed in 1906 with a name honouring President Prudente de Morais; Ukrainian immigration went on until the mid-1920s, its language and traditions are still part of daily life, and the Ukrainian city of Ternopil is its sister city. Its lands hold more than a hundred waterfalls between 80 and nearly 200 metres high, the best known being the 84-metre Salto São João in an araucaria pine forest, 22 kilometres from the centre. Many are reached by dirt roads, so a local guide helps.
