A museum of cars and motorcycles in an 1898 grain silo in the town of Einbeck, opened in 2014 across six floors. The building is part of the idea: a tall industrial silo redesigned internally as a vertical route — visitors take the lift to the top then descend through the floors, moving with time from the earliest vehicles to the newest. The collection exceeds three hundred vehicles and covers a hundred and thirty years: from early horse carriages and bicycles to cars and motorcycles of every era, including East German vehicles. What distinguishes it is that it does not present the vehicles as beautiful objects alone but in their social context: how the car changed the family, the city, work and personal freedom, and what owning one meant in different decades. Einbeck itself is a small town of preserved timber-framed houses, and also a historic brewing town — the word bock for the strong beer style comes from its name.

A former grain silo, Einbeck
Einbeck was an important medieval brewing town exporting its strong beer through the Hanseatic League. When that beer reached Bavaria in the seventeenth century the Bavarians pronounced the town's name Ainbock, later shortened to bock — a word that also means billy goat in German, which is why bottles of the style often carry a goat. The name became a global term for a beer style.
The distance is considerable — about two hundred and forty kilometres — so it is a long day. It is worth it if cars specifically interest you, or if you are travelling between Hamburg and Frankfurt anyway, as it is close to the route. As a there-and-back day trip on its own it is tiring.
