Puerto Almanza is a tiny fishing settlement on the Beagle Channel, 75 kilometres east of Ushuaia along the gravel Route J, and Argentina's southernmost town, lying a little south of Ushuaia itself. Across the channel, close enough to see clearly, is the Chilean town of Puerto Williams on Navarino Island. A few dozen families live from fishing and mussel farming in the cold channel waters, a handful of simple family restaurants serve the day's catch to visitors who make the drive, and an Argentine Navy post watches the shipping in the channel. The road there, through forest and along the shore, is a fine outing in itself. There is no fee; it makes a half-day or full-day trip by car from Ushuaia, often combined with Estancia Harberton.
