Puerto Pirámides is the only town on Península Valdés, a small village of a few hundred people on Golfo Nuevo, begun in 1898 when the salt flats inside the peninsula were worked. Today it is one of the world's leading whale-watching spots, with boats leaving in season to see southern right whales up close. Between June and December the whales come into the calm gulf to mate and calve; boats launch straight from the beach, and mothers with calves often come close. Beside the town, the Punta Pirámide reserve, protected since 1974, has a sea lion colony on the rocks, coloured sandstone cliffs and coastal trails, and the beach is used for diving and kayaking in summer. Entering the peninsula requires the Valdés reserve fee; whale trips are paid separately. The town is about an hour and a half from Puerto Madryn, and staying the night is worthwhile in whale season.
