Puerto Williams is a town and port on Navarino Island in the far south of Chile, facing the Beagle Channel. It is the capital of the Chilean Antarctic Province and the main town inside the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve, and it claims to be the southernmost city in the world. It has about 2,874 people. It was founded in 1953 as Puerto Luisa, then named after John Williams Wilson, the Briton who founded Fuerte Bulnes, the first settlement on the Strait of Magellan. Hikes to the Dientes de Navarino circuit and sea trips towards Cape Horn and Antarctica start here. You see small coloured houses with metal roofs on the channel shore, fishing boats in a small harbour, and behind them sharp snowy peaks called the Teeth of Navarino. From the hills the grey-blue Beagle Channel appears, with Argentina's mountains on the far side. Visitors arrive by small plane from Punta Arenas or by ferry. It is cold and windy most of the year, so bring windproof clothing.
