A broad archaeological site in rural East Lampung, discovered by chance in 1957 by settlers clearing farmland, bringing together remains of successive eras, from prehistoric megalithic culture to the Hindu-Buddhist age and then the Islamic era, in one place. Its highlights are stepped earth-and-stone terraces shaped like small pyramids, called punden berundak, once places of ancient worship, standing and carved stones, an inscribed stone, a Buddhist statue, ditches and earthen ramparts that protected the ancient settlement, and a well and spring. The site has a small museum. Entry is a token fee. The site is quiet and wooded, explored on foot in about an hour. It suits lovers of archaeology and history, about an hour and a half from Bandar Lampung, and can be combined with Way Kambas National Park and its elephants in the same direction.
