The red island

A long sandy beach on Banyuwangi's south coast facing a small hill-shaped island covered in trees, with red soil showing on its sides, hence its name. At low tide you can walk across the sand to the island's base. The beach is known for waves suited to surfing and sometimes hosts international contests, with umbrellas and seafood stalls. Its finest moment is sunset, when the sun sinks behind the island and the sky and water turn orange. The fee is a token one. Waves are sometimes strong, so swim carefully in marked areas only. The drive from Banyuwangi city is about two hours. Come in the afternoon and stay for sunset, combining it with De Djawatan forest on the way.
