A rocky headland jutting into the ocean west of Punta del Este, named «Whale Point» because its long shape resembles a whale's back, dividing two broad bays, ringed by dark granite rocks battered by Atlantic waves and wild coastal plants. A panoramic road runs along the crest of the headland with a string of lookouts over both bays, the beaches and the towers of Punta del Este in the distance. At the tip, short paths lead down to the rocks, and on the southern slope stands the famous white Casapueblo. People come to watch the sunset, as the sun sinks straight into the water from this angle. In winter and spring whales may be seen near the coast. Nearby is the Lussich arboretum with coastal woods. The rocks are slippery and the waves strong, so keep back from the water's edge and mind the wind. Punta del Este is very busy and pricey in summer, December to February, and very quiet the rest of the year.
