A small, smart harbour at the tip of the Punta del Este peninsula, lined with yachts and colourful fishing boats, overlooked by the city's white towers and restaurants, the heart of town life after the beach. Its best-loved sight is the sea lions that come to the fishermen's pier when fish are cleaned, swimming under the boats and bobbing by the pier waiting for scraps, as visitors gather to watch up close. They are strong wild animals, so don't feed them or get too close. Around the harbour are a promenade, cafés and seafood restaurants, and boat trips leave the pier for Isla de Lobos and Isla Gorriti. Near the peninsula's tip are the town lighthouse and a small square. The best times are the morning, when the fishermen return, and sunset over the bay. Punta del Este is very busy and pricey in summer, December to February, and very quiet the rest of the year.
