All year round.
Punta Loma is a small nature reserve on the shore of Golfo Nuevo and the closest sea lion colony to Puerto Madryn. A colony of South American sea lions lives here all year, lying on the rocks and beach below a coastal cliff, with cormorants and gulls around them. Visitors stand on a viewpoint above the cliff, looking down on the colony and hearing the calls of the big males guarding their spots. It is quieter and closer than Península Valdés, good for half a day or an afternoon. The road from town is gravel, and the reserve opens daily from 08:30 to 17:00. Dive centres in town run boat trips to swim with the sea lions near the reserve, at extra cost.
