Punta Tombo is a rocky spit on the Atlantic south of Trelew holding the largest Magellanic penguin colony in Argentina, with hundreds of thousands of birds in the breeding season. The penguins come back each southern spring to dig their nests in the earth and under the bushes, lay their eggs and raise their chicks until late summer, then migrate north. Visitors walk on set paths and boardwalks between the nests, with penguins crossing in front of them on their way to the sea and standing a few steps away. The walk ends at the beach, where the birds gather before diving into the surf. The reserve opens only in season, from 14 September 2026 to 30 March 2027, daily 08:00-20:00 with last entry at 18:00. The drive is long and partly on gravel, so fill the tank and bring water and sunscreen. Do not touch the penguins; their beaks are sharp.
