Pushkar Lake is a small sacred lake in the town of Pushkar, ringed by stone steps down to the water, temples and white houses, with bare hills topped by small temples behind. The houses and hills are mirrored in the water at sunset. The lake is sacred to Hindus and surrounded by 52 bathing ghats where pilgrims come down to bathe, above all in the month of Kartik, October to November, when the famous Pushkar Fair is held. More than 500 temples stand around it. The lake is mentioned on coins from as early as the 4th century BC. The government is de-silting and treating the water to protect it from pollution. You walk the ghats around the lake and sit to watch the sunset and evening rituals. You can also climb to the hilltop temples for the view from above. It is in the centre of Pushkar itself. Take off your shoes on the ghats, do not photograph people bathing, and beware of anyone offering flowers and then asking for money.
