Qantab is a small fishing village on a sandy cove ringed by mountains southeast of Muscat. White sand meets clear water, colourful fishing boats float in the bay, bare rocky hills surround it and a large rock formation stands in the sea. Qantab village is part of Muscat Governorate, and its beach is a popular spot. The Jewel of Muscat, a replica of a 9th-century trading dhow, was built at the traditional boatyard in Qantab. You sit on the sand and swim in the calm water, and take a boat with the fishermen to see small coves and rock formations along the coast. You walk the beach among boats pulled up on the sand, watch fishermen come back with their catch in the morning, and see the white houses on the hillside above the bay. The beach is about 7 km in a straight line southeast of central Muscat, down a road that winds between the mountains. Dress modestly out of the water, agree the boat price before setting off, and take your rubbish home.
