A historic fort in west-central Al Ain, built in the early twentieth century by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Khalifa during his father's reign. It was the birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi and the UAE's second president, and the base of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan while he was the Ruler's Representative in the Eastern Region. The fort was a place where officials met the local community to discuss their affairs and offer support. It is a square enclosure with prominent corner towers and a large entrance, which made it stand out in Al Ain. After restoration it opened as a museum in 2015, telling the story of the fort, its link to the Al Nahyan family and its role in Al Ain's history, and showing how water and the nearby oases shaped life here. A wide forecourt and a reflecting pool mirror its walls. Entry is free, with guided tours, according to Al Ain's official tourism site. Check opening times before you go.
