A marina and waterfront on Fushan Bay in Qingdao, built in 2004–2006 to host the sailing events of the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games; it later became a stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race and the Clipper round-the-world race and has hosted international sailing championships. Yachts and sailing boats line the marina in front of the city's skyline, the Torch Avenue runs along the quay with the flags of the competing nations, and the breakwater ends in a small white lighthouse that photographers seek out at sunset; the centre has a museum of Olympic sailing, and May Fourth Square with its famous red sculpture is a short walk away. The area is open and free at all hours, the museum is free and closed on Mondays, and sailing trips cost extra, per visitor guides. Evening is the best time, when the towers and the marina light up.
