An old city with some 2,200 years of history, where six cities have followed one another since the early Western Han; today it is a 5A scenic area with one and a half square kilometres open to visitors, mostly the old city of Nanyang. Visitors walk its broad walls between the gate towers, stroll East Gate Street and its stone lanes full of shops and crafts, and visit the Ou Garden, once the garden of a Ming prince's palace and later home to a grand secretary of the Qing, with fragrant osmanthus trees surviving from the Ming, rockeries and strange stones. The old city also holds the Zhenjiao Mosque, which blends Chinese and Arab architecture, and a memorial hall to Li Cheng, a master of landscape painting. Entry to the old city is free; the Ou Garden costs about CNY 20, the Fucai Gate tower 5 and the imperial examination hall about 20, per visitor guides.
