The Quebrada de las Flechas, the Gorge of Arrows, is a rocky pass on National Route 40 between Cachi and Cafayate in San Carlos department, running some 20 kilometres from Angastaco to the Calchaquí river. Its rocks are pointed and tilted like arrowheads aimed at the sky, forming narrow passes with walls up to 20 metres high, and in 1995 Salta made it one of the province's symbols. The gravel road threads between these grey and white rocks, with places to stop, take photos and walk a little among the formations. It is the finest stretch of a Route 40 trip through the valleys, usually driven between Cafayate and Cachi. It is free and open. The road is gravel and winding in many places, so drive carefully and avoid driving at night. From Salta it is about 260 kilometres via Cafayate.
