The remains of an old military families' village on the edge of Taichung, almost demolished with others, until one of its residents, a retired soldier, began painting its walls in bright colours in 2008. His pictures spread, a campaign arose to save it, and it survives as an art landmark visited from around the world. The paintings cover almost every surface: walls, doors, windows and floors, in simple, playful shapes of animals, birds, faces, flowers and coloured lines in red, yellow, blue and green, in a naive style like children's drawings. The village is small and seen in under an hour, with a little shop selling postcards and souvenirs that support its upkeep. Photographers and families love it, and it gets busy at weekends. Entry is free, reached by city buses. Respect the houses and do not touch the paintings.
