A wide network of about two hundred huts, hizha, across Bulgaria's mountains, established by the Bulgarian mountaineering union and still working. A hut is a simple building with shared rooms or bunks; some have a kitchen and plain food, some have no electricity. Prices are very low โ usually under ten euros a night. Booking is mostly by telephone with the hut keeper rather than online, and is advisable on summer weekends. Do not rely on a card โ carry cash. This network is what makes long walking in the Bulgarian mountains possible and cheap.

Rayskoto Praskalo โ the spray of paradise โ is **the highest waterfall in Bulgaria and in the whole Balkans**: water falling a hundred and twenty-four metres from a cliff directly below the Botev peak. The fall is fed by snowmelt, and that determines everything: **it peaks in May and June, weakens greatly by late summer, and nearly dries up in dry years**. Anyone going in August may find a thin thread rather than a waterfall. Reaching it is serious mountain walking rather than an outing. The path starts at Kalofer and climbs the Byala Reka valley to the Ray mountain hut โ about five to seven hours there and back with more than a thousand metres of ascent. Most people stay the night at the hut. **Read this carefully: this is not a waterfall you see from a car park.** If you want an accessible waterfall in Bulgaria, choose Krushuna or Hotnitsa instead. And this is bear country.
