Regência, or Regência Augusta, is a coastal village belonging to Linhares, at the point where the Doce River flows into the Atlantic, with about 1,750 residents according to the 2022 census. Its name is traditionally linked to Princess Isabel, daughter of Emperor Dom Pedro II, who governed the country as regent during her father's absences. The village draws surfers with its good waves and holds the «Festa de Caboclo Bernardo», honouring a local hero, where folk «congo» bands from across the state gather, as well as the traditional fishermen's festival. It is also home to the main base in the state of the TAMAR sea turtle conservation project. In November 2015 the mining mud carried down the Doce River after the collapse of the Fundão dam in Minas Gerais reached the river mouth here, making the village a witness to that environmental disaster. It is reached from the BR-101 highway and then the coastal road, much of it unpaved.
