Registro is a city of about 56,000 people on the Ribeira de Iguape River in southern São Paulo state, some 191 kilometres from the capital, and the main town of the Ribeira Valley. Its name means «register», because it was the river port where gold leaving the region was registered before shipment. The river was one of the few routes between the coast and the plateau, since the cliffs of the Serra do Mar made trails hard to open, and the oldest human trace in the valley goes back about ten thousand years. In the twentieth century Registro became one of the main centres of Japanese immigration in Brazil, and that heritage lives on in its food, festivals and the tea farms it was known for. It is a stop on the road between São Paulo and Curitiba, close to Iguape and the PETAR caves.
