Yacyretá is one of the great dams of South America, built jointly by Argentina and Paraguay across the Paraná river at the Apipé rapids, between Ituzaingó in Corrientes and Ayolas in Paraguay. Agreed by treaty in 1973, its power station has an installed capacity of 3,200 MW, making it a major source of electricity for both countries, and its name comes from the Guaraní for «land of the moon». Its earth and rock embankments stretch about 67 kilometres in all, closing both arms of the river around Yacyretá island, and its reservoir reaches as far as Posadas. Free guided tours from the visitor centre in Ituzaingó take in the power station, the navigation lock and the spillways, and the binational company keeps nature reserves to protect the region's wildlife. Tours are free: Monday to Friday at 11 am, and at 11 am and 2 pm at weekends.
