The Vale Nature Reserve, also known as the Linhares Nature Reserve, is a large stretch of Atlantic Forest in northern Espírito Santo covering more than twenty-one thousand hectares, recognised by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage in 1999. It is one of Brazil's fourteen centres of high biodiversity and endemism and among the best-protected conservation areas in South America. Together with the neighbouring Sooretama Biological Reserve it forms a forest complex of more than fifty thousand hectares, the largest block of forest in the state. It is run by the mining company Vale for research and conservation, with a nursery that grows millions of native Atlantic Forest seedlings a year for reforestation, living plant collections, a herbarium and collections of woods, seeds and insects. The reserve welcomes visitors free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 am to 4 pm, with nature trails, picnic areas and a wildlife observation tower with guided time slots, which is sometimes closed for maintenance.
