Rhumsiki is a village in the Mandara Mountains of Cameroon's Far North Region, 55 km from Mokolo and about three kilometres from the Nigerian border. The Kapsiki people live here in small houses of local stone with thatched roofs. It has been called the most visited place in northern Cameroon. The scenery comes from the surrounding volcanic plugs, remnants of long-dormant volcanoes, and basalt outcrops. The French writer André Gide wrote that Rhumsiki's surroundings are «one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world». Travel guides have called it an almost lunar landscape. You see sharp rocky peaks like towers rising over rolling valleys and hills, the best known being the tall Kapsiki Peak. The colours shift from green in the rainy season to golden brown in the dry months. At sunrise and sunset orange light floods the plain and the peaks stand out as dark shapes. It is about 79 km from Maroua in a straight line. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the Far North Region beyond the area around Maroua, and to within 40 km of the Nigerian border, so read the current advice before any planning.
